Ireland to America

Murphy Sisters

The growth of the Congregation has often been described as similar to the growth of an acorn until it finally develops as an oak tree. As with any living organism, there is a cycle of birth, growth, decline and death, followed by rebirth.

The first of a new wave of foundations from Ireland in the USA began in San Antonio, TX, 1952  followed by foundations in Upland, CA, 1955; Globe, AZ and Warner Robbins, GA, 1956; Ensley, AL, 1958 and Montclair, CA 1959. The 60’s brought a new wave of foundations in the US with Gulfport, MS, Sacramento, CA and Biloxi, MS in 1961; Daphne, AL, 1962; Cypress, CA 1963; Mesa, AZ, 1964; Orange, CA, Salt Lake City, UT, and St. Petersburg, FL in 1965; Huntington Beach, CA , 1966 and Metairie, LA, 1967.

In the 70’s there were eight more foundations:  San Bruno, CA, St. Mary’s Sacramento, CA and Louisville, CO in 1970; San Lorenzo, CA, 1971; Highland, CA, 1972; Whittier, CA, 1976; St. Bernadette’s, Los Angeles, CA, 1978 and Robertsdale, AL, 1979. The spread of the congregation continued in the US in the 80’s and 90’s with Monroeville, AL, 1987; Phoenix, AZ, 1989; New Orleans, LA, 1991; Long Beach, MS, 1994, Elmore, AL, 1996 and Watts, CA, 1999.

The movement to spread our charism has continued into this century: Pleasant Grove, AL 2000; Arbor Place, TX, 2001; Oakland, CA, 2003; Adamsville, AL 2004; Lantern Light New Orleans, LA,  2005; Cleveland, MS, 2009 and Shaw, MS, 2010.

Presentation Sisters have become truly a world-wide Congregation and in the spirit of their foundress, Nano Nagle, they are responding to her words:

"If I could be of any service in saving souls in any part of the globe, I would willingly do all in my power."
