NETWORK Nuns on the Bus - the Movie

You may have heard Stephen Colbert say to Sister Simone Campbell, "That's a movie right there, Nuns on a Bus." Well, he's not the only one who thinks so! A Sundance Award-winning film team is making a documentary about Sister Simone and NETWORK's Nuns on the Bus. Read more here or follow the making of this film and their updates from the bus here.

Legislative Update

Dear Sharon,

You may have seen the news: NETWORK's Nuns on the Bus is back! Starting today, we are hitting the road for immigration reform because we know that our country needs commonsense immigration policies that reflect our values, not our fears.

Last week the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to approve S. 744. This week Congress is in recess, so please take a stand by contacting your Members of Congress in their home offices and by coming out to one of our events near you!

Learn more about our trip below or by visiting our website, www.nunsonthebus.org.

Also, be sure to check out this video from Senator Durbin talking about immigration reform and Nuns on the Bus.

Why a bus trip for immigration reform?

Our nation's immigration system is broken. Increased enforcement is tearing families apart and causing suffering for those who are otherwise willing and eager to contribute to our society. Our nation needs an immigration system that reflects our faith values and the needs of the twenty-first century. Such a system reunites families and allows workers the opportunity to come forward without fear to pay taxes and earn legalization. A functioning system will serve the needs of our entire nation -- the 100%.

Be sure to take a look at our immigration fact sheet and share it with your friends.

What's happening in Congress?

As you may remember from previous legislative updates, on April 16, Senator Chuck Schumer and seven bipartisan cosponsors (the so-called "Gang of Eight") introduced the "Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act," the first real attempt in some time to address our broken immigration system. NETWORK's response was an expression of gratitude that Congress was finally dealing with the issue.

The bill passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, May 21, and it is heading for a full Senate vote. In the House, Speaker John Boehner stated on May 23 that they will not vote on a Senate-passed measure and will instead produce their own legislation. We are lobbying in both the Senate and House for bipartisan support of comprehensive immigration reform.

Keep an eye out for updates here, and be sure to send a message to your members of Congress to tell them that we need commonsense immigration reform now!

Here's how you can participate directly in NETWORK's Nuns on the Bus journey.

Please forward this update to any friends who may be interested in receiving emails from NETWORK. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you very much for your continued support of NETWORK's advocacy efforts.

Sincerely,
